Brilliant! All I can say is please make more! I am a very visual learner and I think I could make this dal after watching only once!

Cool! would be good to have the text of the recipe, too!

Glamorous and relaxed: you’re the Indian Nigella! :)

    yeap very glamorouos! :)

btw, well done for providing the index and FAQ! though i liked the old look better, this design is less cluttered (unlike mine!), and very well organised.

Thanks ladies. My personal style is more a cross between Madhur Jaffrey and Gordon Ramsay however…

Maninas - I can’t believe you preferred the old look. I need to work out a way to get the dal recipe on here soon.

I preferred the combination of colours only, not the organisation of the website. apart from the index; i think the old index was better, because it was easier to see all the recipe that are in one category on one page only.

    Hi Maninas

Hugh here - I helped Mallika with the new Look blog - you are right, the index needs some work, and we are planning a new super index under the recipes tab. Coming soon.

    Hi Mallika,

That video was fantastic! Dal is something I’ve always been shy to cook. You really showed how easy it can be. I’m going to need to get some of the spices, in particular the “gum arabic” spice whose name eludes me at the moment.

Food Network? You could make millions!

    That was fun!

Glad to see the glasses of red wine accompanying you both as you go through the spices. :-)

Actually, I was most taken by your miniature frypan! It makes a lot of sense for the spice-cooking, compared to the huge one I always rely on.

Hee hee hee. That’s simultaneously for your Gordon Ramsay/Madhur Jaffrey style and because despite all evidence to the contrary, I didn’t expect you to have a British accent.

I guess living in London for 12 years will do that to you…

I have no opinion on the new look yet, but I’ll keep you posted.

    Hi..
I am feeling very lost with the new look….and hoping you ll go back to your old (familiar look)version….
i dont know how to put it but i ll try…
the old look was more like ‘rasmalai’ rich appealing colourful and this one is like ‘plain milk’, (total flat)
    and missed your signature write-up…..
but it was good to see you though….

wow! i was just alerted to the new look by a friend! i love the video - so i finally know that i was using a tea spoon that was way SMALL when following your recipes all this while! good to know!

You look perfectly relaxed in front of the cam!

If someone called me ‘the Indian Nigella’ I’d be pretty insulted. Nigella is an abomination who is painful to watch.

And anyway, you are much much prettier than her :-D

    no salt?

Lee - you’re making me blush. I do love watching her though!

mmm - we saved the sum total of three seconds on this hideously long video by editing out the salt. By all means add away…

Hi Mallika, cheers for making indian food cooked so easy with a glamorous tarka.
I started cooking after my marriage n just an year now so cant praise myself.
I do care about energy saving as well so i dont know how much u appreciate but instead of cooking daal in pan dont u think we can pressure cook the same as it will cook fast and will save the gas/electricity watever.

More so ever to keep the nutrients intact we can cut the carrot in thick pieces, as they will be soft to eat coz they will be boiled.

Once again its nice to watch the video.

Hi Sonali - Thanks so much for your comment and feedback. I recommend pressure cookers a lot, having only acquired and learnt to use one last year myself. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t use pressure cookers. None of my friends, associates or colleagues. So I don’t want to put people off by using it in the first video. Maybe in a future one… who knows!

    Best

Neat, to the point demo of the dal. Even a die hard South Indian like me is now motivated to make it !

We need more videos like that please. Surely, there are dishes from the South you could demo?

    Thanks
